Your Scalp Deserves More Love; Reviewing ROH Haircare
Share
Your scalp is an extension of your skin—so why isn’t it a bigger part of your self-care routine? That’s the premise behind ROH, an Australian haircare brand under NAK, which focuses on promoting a healthy scalp microbiome while cleansing, moisturizing, and detangling your hair. But what does that actually mean? And does it live up to the promise?
To truly understand its benefits (and because my hair was in desperate need of some TLC), I decided to test out the ROH range for myself. Here's what I found:
What Is the Scalp Microbiome and Why Should You Care?
Just like the skin on your face, your scalp has a unique ecosystem of microorganisms—bacteria, fungi, and other tiny organisms—living on it. These microbes work together to protect your scalp, forming a natural barrier that contributes to healthier hair. Factors like your environment, hygiene, and the hair products you use can disrupt this delicate balance. A healthy scalp microbiome creates the ideal foundation for strong, shiny, and resilient hair.
ROH’s philosophy is simple: healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Their range, made with proudly vegan ingredients, is designed to nurture this microbiome while delivering noticeable results.
First Impressions: Is ROH Different?
After looking into the range I decided to Trial The Universal Hair Wash, The Universal Hair Conditioner and The Drench Hair Masque. I felt from a quick read of their descriptions that this collection would best suit my hair type, rather than the Reset or Purify & Plump sets. I also didn't want to add too much to the routine all at once, hence why I decided against trialling the Scalp Scrub or the Tonic.
When I started using the Universal Hair Washand Conditioner, I wasn’t expecting miracles. My hair is far from perfect—heavily color-treated and prone to dryness—but I don’t struggle with dandruff, and it takes a while for my roots to get oily. My assumption? My scalp was already in decent shape, so I wouldn’t notice much change.
I was wrong.
After just one use, my hair felt undeniably cleaner and smoother. It was easier to brush, both before and after blow-drying, and it felt like the silky, unprocessed hair I had as a child. My hair dried with less effort, stayed fresh for days, and felt incredibly lightweight.
The detangling effect was particularly impressive. I’d assumed my hair’s tendency to knot was just "how it is," but ROH completely changed that. With consistent use, my hair has continued to feel softer, smoother, and healthier—perfect timing as we head into the hot, humid summer months.
How About Over Time?
After several weeks of use, the benefits became even clearer. My once-stubborn frizz is noticeably tamed, and my hair feels stronger and more manageable. Even friends and family started commenting on how healthy my hair looked—without knowing I’d changed anything in my routine.
One standout result is how lightweight my hair feels after washing. Other brands often leave my hair feeling heavy or coated, but ROH gives my hair that “just-cleaned” freshness for longer.
Room for Improvement?
If I had to nitpick, I’d say the range could be a touch more moisturizing. My heavily colour-treated and porous hair craves intense hydration, so I occasionally supplement the routine with a richer hair oil or a deeply hydrating mask. That said, all three products I tested still exceeded my expectations and left my hair looking and feeling great.
The hair mask is the product I probably expected more from. I love a good hair treatment and, though my hair was definitely more hydrated and smooth after use, I just think it didn’t provide the deep hydration my hair desperately needs. If your hair isn’t as dry and damaged as mine, it might work perfectly for you—but for me I’ll likely have to use an additional, more intensive hair mask every so often alongside the ROH range.
Then again, if the Drench Masque was more hydrating, you’d probably have to sacrifice the lightweight feel the hair has after use, which as previously mentioned is one of my favourite benefits. If you’re considering purchasing the masque, I’d still recommend it. But I’d also probably recommend another hydrating product for your hair alongside it if need be.
Ratings and Recommendations
Here’s how I’d rate each product:
Universal Hair Wash:10/10. It cleans thoroughly without stripping, leaving my hair refreshed and balanced.
Universal Hair Conditioner:
9/10. Detangles beautifully and leaves hair silky, though I’d love a bit more hydration.
Drench Hair Masque:
7/10. A solid option for maintaining scalp health, but not quite moisturizing enough for my color-treated hair.
Final Thoughts
ROH has crafted a range that delivers on its promise of promoting scalp health while enhancing the overall condition of your hair. The shampoo and conditioner are standout products that I’ll continue using for their noticeable results and gentle yet effective formulas.
If you’re looking to improve the health and appearance of your hair—regardless of type or length—ROH is worth a try. While I’ll likely swap the mask for a more hydrating alternative, the range as a whole impressed me far more than I anticipated. If given the chance, I’d definitely love to try some of the other products in the range, especially the hair oil.
Whether your hair needs a serious refresh or just a little extra care, ROH offers an approachable yet science-backed solution. Because when it comes to haircare, your scalp deserves just as much love as the rest of your skin. I definitely recommend trying it and seeing the difference it has on your hair health! I was very pleasantly surprised by these products and I’ll continue to use them in the future.
